Techno Music

Techno Music, also known as just Techno to fans, can best be described as a specialized genre of music, referred to commonly as electronic dance music. Techno Music got its start in the 1980s in Michigan, most popularly in Detroit. Techno Music is an interesting mixture of European electronic music, funk, electro, Chicago House, and electric jazz. Most music in the genre does not have lyrics and instead employs a science fiction type sound. Popular Techno Bands include Kraftwerk and the Belleville Three. In fact, Techno Music actually got its start thanks to the band known as the Belleville Three. Considered to be the first of all Techno Bands, the Belleville Three consisted of Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, and Eddie Fowlkes. Each of these musicians released music on their own and as a group as well. Once their sound began to catch on, the genre received its own name – Techno Music – and many devoted followers. Today, there are actually lots of different types of Techno Music. Some people consider certain forms to be less valid than others, while some people simply listen to a wide range of different sounds in the genre. Variations on the original format laid out by the Belleville Three include minimal, intelligent, free, proto, and retro. Newcomers to the genre are encouraged to listen to a wide range of different sounds and styles in order to find the one that is most suited to their specific musical tastes. Within this widely varied genre, there really is something to be found and enjoyed for everyone and for every musical preference.

Minimal, for example, focuses on having less of a “rave” type sound and strives to be raw and pure. The music typically features only the sounds produced by drums and bass. The intelligent style of the music is also similar in nature and focuses less on showy sounds and more on producing good, solid dance music. The free style is the one most people think of today when they think of this genre. It is considered “party music,” and is all about fun, energy, and life. While there are some “snobs” that consider only one of the many types of the music to be acceptable, most people who enjoy the genre can find value in several different forms or styles of the music. The best thing to do is for people to just like what they like, without worrying about labels. After all, this type of freedom really is the basis of the music itself.
